The white spots scattered across the wings give this dragonfly its distinctive 'pied' name and help it blend into dappled sunlight around vegetation. As a member of the skimmer family, it has an enormous appetite for mosquitoes, gnats, and other flying insects.
These dragonflies are incredibly maneuverable fliers that can hover and stop on a dime, allowing them to hunt in tight spaces where larger predators can't reach. They're relentless mosquito-control machines that patrol vegetation all day, keeping insect populations in check.
