Hidden within pine trees, this beetle is a master carpenter that spends most of its life tunneling through wood. Wood-boring beetles like this one can cause serious damage to forestry, but they're also essential decomposers that help recycle dead wood back into the forest ecosystem. The larvae create intricate tunnel networks that look like abstract art inside the heartwood.

Metallic and striking in appearance, these beetles emerge from their wooden nurseries as adults ready to find a mate and repeat the cycle. What might seem like destruction is actually nature's recycling program—taking dead pines and returning their nutrients to the soil for new growth.
