One of Europe's largest insects, this wingless predator reaches up to 10.5 centimeters (exceptionally 12 cm) from head to ovipositor tip. It never evolved wingsβit doesn't need them. With a body 5β7 cm long (up to 7.8 cm in the largest individuals), it's built like a miniature hunting machine, coming in brown or green. Found across southern Europe and western Asia, it ranks among the world's largest Orthoptera, a serious ambush predator that dominates its habitat through sheer size and efficiency.
