The 'rabid' part of this wolf spider's name comes not from aggression, but from its hunting style—fast, relentless, and always on the prowl. Unlike web-building spiders, wolf spiders actively hunt by sight, running down prey across the ground with impressive speed. Found from Maine to Florida and west to Texas, this North American native is a ground-dwelling hunter that relies on speed and vision rather than webs. Female wolf spiders are notably maternal, carrying their egg sacs and later transporting dozens of spiderlings on their backs—one of nature's more touching scenes. If you see a spider sprinting across your floor, there's a good chance it's a hunting wolf spider.
