New Zealand's most abundant native damselfly, this fiery creature is absolutely everywhere around streams and wetlands. Its brilliant red coloration makes it unmissable as it zips through vegetation near flowing water. What's striking is that despite being so common, it's still stunning—proof that abundance doesn't diminish beauty. The red damselfly is a marker of healthy freshwater ecosystems; if you see these darting around, you've found water worth protecting. Their agility around aquatic plants is remarkable as they hunt small insects with precision.
