Surviving winter under frozen tree bark requires serious biological improvisation. These beetles have mastered an extraordinary trick: they can actually swap their entire overwintering strategy depending on conditions, changing how their bodies prepare for freezing temperatures from season to season. Living in harsh climates where they squeeze under bark of dead poplar and ash, they're also fierce predators, hunting wood-boring beetles, mites, and other insects. It's nature's version of having a survival plan B, C, and D.
