This is a beetle with no altitude limits. Found from tropical sea level up to 3,000 meters in cloud forests, it thrives across the Amazon basin in nearly every habitat imaginable. While most dung beetles stick faithfully to one food source, this species is bold and opportunistic: it cheerfully feeds on dung, dead animals, and whatever else the jungle provides. The higher and deeper you go into the neotropics, the more useful these cleanup crew members become to the ecosystem.
