This sea slater boasts an extraordinary claim to fame: while most members of its species live in shallow rockweed along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to San Francisco, some populations dive to staggering depths of 919 metresโ€”a range that spans from sunlit tide pools to the crushing darkness of the deep ocean. Usually green in colour, it camouflages itself perfectly among the seaweed where it hides in the intertidal zone, a master of the rocky shore ecosystem. Growing to about 4 centimetres, it was named after Russian biologist Ilya G. Voznesensky, an explorer whose curiosity about sea life helped establish its scientific identity. The diversity of habitat it occupies reveals an astonishing ability to adapt to wildly different pressures and conditions.
