These tiny midges are master plant manipulators. They cause abnormal, bulging plant growths called galls by laying eggs on leaves and branches—their larvae then trick the plant into creating twisted, bumpy protective structures around them. It's like the insect remotely controls the plant's growth system to build a custom nursery. Different species specialize in different host plants: some prefer hawthorn, others target ash trees. The relationship between gall-maker and plant is one of nature's most intricate biological hijackings, turning the plant into an unwilling construction worker.
