Fritillaries are among the flashiest butterflies in temperate grasslands, with intricate orange and black patterns, and this is one of the most widespread and variable of the clan. Named for the silvery sheen on the underside of its wings, it spans an enormous range from North Africa across Europe deep into Asia, reaching all the way to Japan.

The "variable" in its biology means individuals can look strikingly different depending on geography and environmental conditions during development. This adaptability has allowed it to thrive across countless habitats and climates, from Mediterranean grasslands to cool northern meadows, making it a delight for enthusiasts hunting regional varieties.
