Originally from Southern Africa, this species became a global invader, spreading to New Zealand (since 1978), Portugal, and Los Angeles. Its secret weapon? Parthenogenesisβ€”unmated females can reproduce asexually, creating genetically identical clones without needing a mate at all. This combination of reproductive flexibility and independence makes it one of nature's most successful colonizers. The ability to establish thriving populations from just a few individuals helps explain its remarkable global spread.
