Meet a spider that sometimes eats her own partner—right after mating. This species' reputation is legendary, built partly on dramatic (but rare) cannibalism and partly on her glossy black body with a distinctive red hourglass marking on the abdomen. While her venom is potent and delivers painful bites, it's rarely fatal to healthy humans—medical cases are uncommon because females are reluctant to bite unless severely threatened. Found across North America, these spiders prefer dark, undisturbed spaces like sheds and woodpiles.
