GenusSicklelegs (Asemosyrphus)
These rat-tail maggot flies live a double life: larvae breathe through a long retractable tube while dwelling in murky water and wet soil, then transform into graceful hovering adults. The genus contains three described species, each with unique adaptations to aquatic and semi-aquatic life. Originally classified in the genus Lejops, the reclassification reflects our growing understanding of how these aquatic larval specialists fit into the syrphid family tree. They're engineers of underwater survival.
