This damselfly has two common names—the northern damselfly or spearhead bluet—but it's the second name that best describes what makes it special. Its abdomen tapers to a sharp, pointed tip that resembles a spearhead, giving it a distinctive silhouette among other bluets. Found in cooler northern regions, it's adapted to life in the far north's brief but intense aquatic seasons. That pointed tail is your most reliable field mark for quick identification.
