Despite its fearsome, castle-like spiky abdomen that looks intimidating, this orb-weaver is incredibly tiny (measuring just 4–11 millimeters) and completely harmless to humans. Its striking black and white body can display splashes of yellow on the sides, creating a beautiful if unusual appearance. The venom only targets insects—it's utterly ineffective against humans or any larger animals. Look for them spinning their tightly coiled webs during late summer and early fall when they're most active. These spiders are diurnal hunters, making them one of the few species you'll actually see actively hunting in broad daylight.
