GenusLarge Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa)
Carpenter bees are master woodworkers: they tunnel into dead wood and bamboo to create nesting chambers, earning their name through impressive carpentry skills. The genus Xylocopa is one of the most diverse bee groups, with around 500 species and 31 subgenera sharing this fundamental behavior.
Most species follow traditional wood-boring strategies, but some exceptions in the subgenus Proxylocopa dig nesting tunnels in soil instead, showing remarkable behavioral flexibility. These solitary bees are crucial pollinators, quietly shaping plant life despite preferring solo living. Each female is architect, builder, and provisioner combined.
