Here's a cautionary tale about invasive species. Listed among the world's 100 worst invasive species, this moth has become a global disaster across multiple continents. Originally from Europe and Asia, it was accidentally introduced to North America and now wreaks havoc in Africa and South America too. Caterpillars with an appetite for nearly any tree—deciduous or coniferous—and the ability to reproduce rapidly cause catastrophic damage. When populations boom, entire forests get stripped bare. The newer common name 'spongy moth' references the moth's distinctive sponge-like egg masses, which help identify infestations.
