These wasps are master plant manipulators, employing one of nature's most ingenious hijacking schemes. When a female lays her eggs in a plant, she injects chemicals that trick the plant into growing bizarre protective structures called galls around the developing larvae. It's a stunning evolutionary arms-race: the wasp gets a custom-built nursery with food and shelter, while the plant gets nothing but a deformed leaf. Found throughout Europe, this species perfectly demonstrates how far insects have evolved to exploit their hosts.
