This European hoverfly is a true overachiever: the most abundant Helophilus species in Britain and found across nearly an entire continent. Its range is staggering—from the Mediterranean sun-belt all the way to Iceland and the Faroe Islands, then eastward across Russia from the Kola Peninsula through Crimea and beyond to the Pacific. The scientific name is poetic: "dangling marsh-lover," perfectly capturing the hovering dance these flies perform over wetlands. Whether in a Mediterranean bog or Scandinavian marsh, you're likely to spot this remarkably adaptable survivor.
