This Trinidad endemic spider carries a distinctive chevron pattern decorating its body, found nowhere else on Earth. The Theraphosidae family โ€” true tarantulas โ€” are among the largest and longest-lived spiders on Earth, and this species brings that impressive lineage to a single Caribbean island. Endemic species like this one face unique conservation considerations, as their range is limited to a single geographic area.

Tarantulas are often feared, but they're relatively docile hunters that would rather chase down arthropods than encounter humans. The chevron tarantula is a reminder of Trinidad's remarkable spider diversity and why tropical islands harbor some of the world's most specialized fauna.
