This striking butterfly holds a unique claim to fame: it's the only Charaxes species native to Europe, making it a true continental celebrity. But here's what makes it even more remarkable—molecular evidence shows it diverged from its closest African relatives roughly 2 million years ago during the Pliocene era. That ancient split means it's been flying European landscapes since the age of early human ancestors, adapting to a temperate world far removed from its tropical origins. The "two-tailed pasha" name refers to its distinctive trailing hindwing tails.
