Two-tailed Swallowtail Papilio multicaudata

Most swallowtails sport a single elegant tail on each hindwing. This one has two — a double set of trailing tails that makes it unmistakable in flight and lends it a theatrical, almost extravagant appearance. It is also a giant: one of the largest butterflies in western North America, with a wingspan that can exceed five inches. Those extra tails likely help misdirect bird attacks away from the body, a classic swallowtail survival trick made even more effective with double the decoy. It ranges from British Columbia to Central America, favoring canyon lands, foothills, and mountain meadows. Males are especially fond of hilltop perching — staking out high ground to intercept passing females, a behavior known as hilltopping.
