So similar to the common darter that it's being chronically undercounted, this European dragonfly is taxonomy's trickster. Its moustache-like facial markings inspired the alternate common name, and the species does occasionally appear as a genuine vagrant far north of its normal range. But here's the catch: it's likely that many field observers simply misidentify it for a common darter and move on without recording it, meaning we probably don't have an accurate picture of where these dragonflies actually live.
