Here's something unusual: this damselfly holds its wings open at rest, not folded like most damselflies. That open-wing posture is a giveaway if you're searching in Europe, North Africa, or Western Asia. The metallic green body is unmistakable, decorated with pale brown spots on the wings. This species goes by three different names—willow emerald damselfly, green emerald damselfly, and western willow spreadwing—reflecting its popularity among watchers. Look for it near still water surrounded by overhanging trees, where it hunts tiny flying insects. Its elongated abdomen helps it maneuver gracefully through dense vegetation.
