The name 'wartbiter' comes from medieval folklore—people once believed these insects could bite off warts, and honestly, with those powerful jaws, it's easy to see why the legend stuck. This large, intimidating bush-cricket sports a distinctive pale or white face that makes identification straightforward. Found in warm southern regions adapted to drought conditions, they prefer dry, open habitats. Despite their fearsome appearance and impressive size, they're mostly herbivorous, feeding on grasses and shrubs. Males produce loud songs during breeding season, filling Mediterranean evenings with their distinctive calls.
