These butterflies are feisty little fighters with a uniquely theatrical territorial display. Males stake out territories roughly 15 meters in diameter and defend them with almost comical aggression against any passing insectsβand especially against rival males. From this base camp, they perch vigilantly and pounce on intruders with surprising fury for such delicate-winged creatures. Found across the southeastern United States, Central America, and throughout South America, their combination of aggressive behavior and beautiful patterned wings makes them endlessly fascinating to observe.
