While Africa hosts several species of Goliath beetles, this one claims a unique distinction: it's the only Goliath species found exclusively in subtropical Africa. That's no small matter when you're talking about a beetle that can weigh as much as a small bird and stretch as long as your hand. As one of the world's heaviest insects, this species represents nature's most extreme approach to insect gigantism.
