With its distinctive yellow coloring and dark bands crossed by a black central smudge, this hoverfly looks remarkably like it's wearing a maskβ€”which is exactly why it earned the playful nickname "Batman hoverfly." This common European and North African species is a true creature of variability; it's markedly inconsistent in size, shape, and even color intensity from individual to individual. One fascinating quirk of museum science: any yellow pigmentation on preserved specimens fades to brown over time, meaning historical museum specimens look strikingly different from living flies. You might barely recognize it as the same species when viewing preserved examples.
