First scientifically described in Tokyo back in 1901, this invasive mosquito has spread across the northern hemisphere, expanding northward as global temperatures climb. Despite its modest origins as an Asian bush mosquito living in rock pools, it's proven to be a competent vector for West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis. Its ability to breed in unusual habitats gives it a survival edge in colonizing new regions, making it a growing public health concern across multiple continents.
