Another formidable member of the infamous bull ant family, known throughout Australia for one of the most painful insect stings on the continent. This red-colored species has a massive distribution along the coasts and major inland areas of New South Wales and Victoria, making it a common—and sometimes unwelcome—encounter for people in those regions. They're solitary, active foragers that are highly aggressive in defending their colonies. Despite the painful sting and territorial behavior, they're important predators in their native ecosystems.
