Most orb-weaving spiders are shy, nocturnal creatures, but not this one. The kite spider is actively hunting and building during daylight hours โ an unusual strategy that makes it much easier to spot and appreciate. Named for its distinctly kite-shaped abdomen, this African spider is instantly recognizable by its bold, geometric body.
The name "versicolor" refers to its variable coloration โ different individuals display different color patterns and combinations, creating a rainbow of possibilities across Central, East, and Southern Africa. Daylight activity also means better visibility for the weaver, letting it maintain and defend its web more effectively.
