The most extensively studied terrestrial isopod on Earth goes by at least eight different common names — roly-poly, potato bug, slater, doodle bug, and carpenter. Originally from Mediterranean Europe, this pill woodlouse has colonized nearly every suitable habitat on the planet. Hobbyists breed them as pets specifically for their stunning color variations, making them as sought-after as some ornamental beetles.
