GenusCrow Butterflies (Euploea)
The 'two-brand' or 'double-branded' in its name refers to distinctive paired white or pale markings that adorn its dark wings like twin signatures. This striking crow butterfly belongs to the danaid group—milkweed butterflies that have evolved a clever survival strategy: they feed on milkweed plants as caterpillars, sequestering toxic compounds that make them poisonous to predators. The adults advertise this toxicity through bold, conspicuous wing patterns—the insect equivalent of a warning label. Found from South Asia through Southeast Asia and into Australia, this widespread species demonstrates how successful this poisoning strategy has been.
