The emerald spreadwing goes by many aliases—scarce emerald damselfly, robust spreadwing, and turlough spreadwing in Ireland—each name hinting at a different aspect of its character. What's remarkable is that despite its common name, it's actually quite uncommon, making sightings something to treasure. These damselflies hold their wings open to the sides while resting, unlike most damselflies that fold theirs along their body. This behavior, which gives the family its name, makes them instantly recognizable and strikingly elegant with their emerald coloration.
