This small spreadwing is a hardy temperate-region damselfly, native to much of Europe and western and central Asia. The spreadwing family's relaxed wing-holding posture—wings held open to the sides rather than folded along the body—makes them instantly recognizable and strikingly elegant. Despite being 'small,' this species is tough: it thrives across a vast geographic range, adapting to diverse climates from northern Europe to the Asian steppes. Its emerald coloring gives it the alternate name 'small emerald spreadwing,' a jewel-like appearance that belies its resilience. These damselflies are survivors, excellent indicators of healthy freshwater ecosystems.
