Fasciated Conehead Mantid Empusa fasciata

Hidden in Mediterranean scrubland and forests, this species blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Like all mantises, it's a perfectly evolved ambush predator—patient, fast, and merciless. The genus includes some of Europe's most beautifully patterned species, and this one uses cryptic coloration to vanish into vegetation.
