Don't let the impressive name fool you—despite the word "giant" in its common title, this species measures just 15 millimetres in length. Brown and striped in appearance, it's unremarkable at first glance, yet it's become widespread throughout Europe and has been accidentally introduced to North America where it thrives equally well. Like all woodlice, it's a saprophage, meaning it feeds on decaying plant matter—forest floors covered in rotting leaves are this creature's gourmet buffet. Its relatively small size actually helps it squeeze into the tiniest crevices in leaf litter where larger predators cannot reach. Humble in stature but prolific in distribution, this woodlouse represents a remarkable success story of quiet adaptation and hidden abundance found across two continents.
