As its name suggests, this is genuinely one of the largest crane flies you'll ever see—giant by any fly standard. But the larvae have an incredible superpower: specialized gut bacteria that digest tough plant matter. These aquatic larvae live in riparian zones munching on waterlogged leaf litter, essentially hosting their own decomposition factory. The partnership with symbiotic bacteria allows them to break down leaves that would otherwise be indigestible, making them surprisingly important in freshwater ecosystems as decomposers and nutrient recyclers.
