The name says it all—this crane fly ranks among the largest in its enormous genus, which spans over 2,000 species worldwide. Crane flies are perpetually mistaken for giant mosquitoes, a confusion rooted in their gangly bodies and slender wings, though they're completely harmless—no biting, no disease transmission. What they lack in predatory behavior, they make up for in sheer fragility; their delicate frames seem barely capable of supporting flight, with impossibly long legs that contribute more to their awkward silhouette than to any survival advantage.
