This tick is a master of stealth and persistence: it bites painlessly, leaving victims completely unaware they've been invaded. Once attached, it can feed for up to seven days, remaining hidden under clothing or in hair. Found throughout the eastern United States and Mexico, the female bears a distinctive silvery-white star-shaped spot that inspired its name. It's aggressive and resourceful โ€” its larvae can even transfer themselves from discarded clothing back onto skin. An unpredictable tick that breaks all the rules of expected behavior, making it one of the most troublesome species in North America.
