One of hundreds of ladybird species in the Coccinellidae family, this beetle has a history stretching back over 250 years. It was formally described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775, making it one of the older formally named ladybird species. The scientific name "lunata" hints at the distinctive crescent-shaped markings that distinguish it from its beetle cousins. Like all ladybirds, it's a predatory insect, though specific details about its hunting behaviors and the exact prey it favors remain understudied by modern naturalists.
