Don't trust this ladybird's common name to help you identify it: the six-spotted zigzag ladybird comes in multiple color morphs that confuse even experienced observers, ranging from spotted to striped to nearly plain. Yet despite this identity confusion, it's a voracious aphid hunter prized throughout its native Asian tropics and subtropics.
Its effectiveness made it a biocontrol agent of choice: humans deliberately shipped it to the Caribbean, where it succeeded so well that by 2019 it had spread under its own power all the way to South America—proof that nature doesn't respect our containment plans.
