This spider lives in the shadow of its infamous cousin, the genuinely dangerous black widow. The 'false' in its name is crucial—while it shares similar coloring and body shape, it's completely harmless to humans. Native to Mediterranean countries, Southern Europe, and Western Asia, it's a common tangle-web spider that spins chaotic, three-dimensional webs instead of organized geometric patterns.

The species was named to honor Gustaf von Paykull, an 18th-century Swedish naturalist. Ironically, this spider's 'false' label might protect it from unnecessary fear—a reminder that appearance alone doesn't determine danger.
