This dragonfly has an identity crisis—it goes by at least three common names: the yellow-patched lieutenant, rufous-backed marsh hawk, and blue dasher. The confusion is understandable given its striking mix of colors: brilliant blue and rufous-red patches that shift as it moves. What's not confusing is its range: it's found from India all the way to Japan and Indonesia, making it one of eastern Asia's most widespread dragonflies.

That range tells you everything about its success as a generalist hunter.
