This spider has evolved a diabolical hunting trick: it weaves UV-reflecting silk into its web specifically to lure unsuspecting pollinators—creating a neon trap for bees and butterflies. The web features an elaborate zigzag pattern called a stabilimenta that makes the structure even more conspicuous to prey. Despite its predatory nature, its venom is completely harmless to humans. Females occasionally practice sexual cannibalism, eating mates before or after reproduction. Found across warm, arid environments from the southern United States through Central and South America, this spider uses deception to thrive where insects are scarce.
