This upland dweller is a champion of high-altitude acoustic communication. The scientific name 'cantans' literally means 'singing,' a fitting tribute to these prolific nocturnal performers that fill mountain meadows with their evening choruses. Bright green coloration provides perfect camouflage among upland vegetation, while long antennae allow them to detect rivals and potential mates through the darkness. These bush crickets are masters of acoustic signals, using complex songs to establish territories and attract partners in their cool mountain habitats. Their voices are among the defining sounds of European alpine evenings.
