Named for California but officially renamed after taxonomic clarification, this western U.S. native is a masterclass in evolutionary design. Mantises can rotate their heads nearly 180 degrees to track prey, and they strike with reflexes faster than you can blink. What's truly remarkable is their binocular visionβ€”they're one of the few insects that can perceive depth, giving them a hunting advantage that's almost supernatural. These apex predators anchor their local food webs and serve as ecosystem engineers despite their small size.
