GenusStagmomantis (Stagmomantis)
One of North America's native mantises, this Carolina resident represents the praying mantis family at its most elegant and efficient. While less famous than its Asian cousin that arrived by accident, this species belongs to a subfamily that boasts some of the most effective hunters in the insect world. Mantises are apex predators at their scale, with forward-facing eyes and lightning-fast reflexes that make them deadly to anything smaller that strays into range. For a species with so little documented behavior in common sources, it remains a testament to how much wildlife goes unstudied even in our own backyards.
