Considered one of the most dangerous spiders on Earth, the Chilean recluse earned its fearsome reputation honestly. Also called the 'corner spider' (araña de rincón in Spanish) because it hides in tight spaces, this highly venomous arachnid delivers bites that can cause serious systemic reactions—including, in rare cases, death. Its venom destroys skin and tissue, sometimes causing necrotic lesions that take months to heal. Originally from Chile, it has hitchhiked in shipping containers to parts of the Americas and beyond. While bites are rare without provocation, this is definitely one resident you don't want in your closet.
