GenusBumble Bees (Bombus)
This neotropical bumblebee rewrites the rulebook for bee colony life: it's the only bumblebee species discovered that can toggle between single-queen and multi-queen nesting patterns, even creating perennial colonies that survive year after year—extraordinarily rare among bumblebees. When multiple queens share a nest, tensions run high, leading to intense queen-queen aggression as these powerful insects battle for dominance. These bees are also heat-engineering masters, using muscle contractions to thermoregulate their nests and handle South America's seasonal temperature swings with precision.
